Jordan Assumes Chairmanship of MENAFATF for 2025
Amman, Jan 6 (Petra) -- Jordan has assumed the chairmanship of the Financial Action Task Force for the Middle East and North Africa (MENAFATF) for the year 2025.
This leadership role reflects Jordan’s continued commitment, demonstrated through the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing (NCCTC), to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing at both the national and international levels.
Jordan’s leadership follows its successful removal from the FATF gray list, a significant milestone that has been recognized globally.
Adel Al-Sharkas, Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan and Chair of the NCCTC, emphasized, "Jordan’s unwavering dedication at the highest levels has positioned us as a regional leader in combating money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing. Our active engagement with MENAFATF since its establishment in 2004 underscores our role as a model in the region."
Sharkas noted that Jordan’s chairmanship of MENAFATF in 2025 will play a pivotal role in advancing the group’s strategic goals.
"Our leadership will foster increased cooperation and coordination across the region, ensuring that we uphold international standards and support global efforts to protect the integrity of the financial system," he said.
Sharkas further announced that Ms. Samya Abu Shareef, Head of Jordan’s Financial Intelligence Unit and Chair of the Technical Committee responsible for implementing targeted financial sanctions since 2020, will assume the role of Chair of MENAFATF for 2025.
This marks the first time a woman has held this position since the group’s inception in 2004. Abou Sharif has been instrumental in enhancing Jordan’s national and international frameworks for combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
The appointment reflects Jordan’s unwavering commitment to combating financial crimes, ensuring the stability of the global financial system, and fostering regional cooperation to address shared threats.
In a strategic alignment, Jordan and the UAE have set out key strategic priorities for MENAFATF’s chairmanship for 2025 and 2026, as confirmed during the group’s recent plenary meeting held in Riyadh. This partnership underscores a two-year commitment to advancing MENAFATF’s objectives and strengthening efforts to combat financial crimes.
Dr. Sharkas, along with Ms. Abou Sharif, met with Hamed Saif Al-Zaabi, Vice Chair of MENAFATF and Secretary-General of the UAE’s National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, as well as Suleiman bin Rashid Al-Jabrin, Executive Secretary of MENAFATF, to discuss collaboration and coordination between the two countries.
Jordan’s leadership of MENAFATF in 2025, combined with its continued efforts to combat transnational financial crimes, reflects the country’s commitment to contributing to regional and international stability and ensuring the integrity of global financial systems.
